The Hurting
WEIGHT: 100kgs
DIMENSIONS: 95 x 80 x (25 without disc and arm, 45 with said attachemnts) cm
SHAPE: Your standard two thirds box one third wedge, with sloping sides/rear and reversed
COLOUR: Yellow and black chevrons with black side panels and base. Name written in white on the sides.
DRIVE: 2 S28-400 Magmotors run at 24v from 4 NiMh packs driving two front aluminium wheels enclosed inside the robot with urethane rubber treads for grip.
SPEED: 10mph average, 14mph max
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 at rear due to wedge, rising to 10mm at the front with two hinged aluminium spike/wedge things either side of the disc running along the ground
ARMOUR: Most of the robot is a 3.25mm Hardox monocoque construction with additional 5mm polycarbonate layers over the front, sides and rear. The top panels are 20mm HDPE to save on weight, and the rear wedge has a 2mm spring steel strip to get underneath other robots.
WEAPONS: This could take a while...sticking out of the front in a similar manner to Kody's original Tira is a 20kg 40cm diameter vertical upward spinning disc constructed from titanium and Hardox with two hardened tool steel teeth not shaped to do anything in particular. This discs is powered by a ten horsepower 125cc Stihl chainsaw engine, modified a bit to remove excess weight and improve the power etc. to around 3000rpm, giving somewhere in the region of 30kj on impact, more than enough to rip light armour and flip the opposition.
The disc also drives, through a belt, a gearbox containing a dog clutch mechanism connected to a Cassius like forward hinged Hardox bar which extends up beyond the rear wedge and over the top of the disc, acting as a sort of guard to prevent it hitting the floor when inverted. The idea is that when something presses down on the bar - either another robot or the arena floor when the machine is flipped - it engages the dog clutch and uses the flywheel energy from the disc to propel the bar forwards with considerable force, self righting or flipping the opponent rather stylishly and explosively. (for flipping purposes, the bar is at a slightly steeper angle than the rear wedge so it will not fire until the opponent is about halfway up it, meaning no misfires unless someone hits it with an axe, and also making the weapon sort of autonomous)
To prevent the whole mechanism self destructing, hardened 2014 aluminium gears are used and the linkage to the flipper/self righter includes a shock absorber to minimise the shock to the gearbox.
For those who hate descriptions: Big vertical disc at the front, automatic kinetic energy driven forward hinged flipper/srimech at the rear.
SRIMECH: See weaponry, angle of sides prevents stranding and a couple of protruding HDPE pieces on the top encourage it to land squarely on its back for activation of the self righter.
THEME SONG: "The Hurting" by Tears For Fears. What else?
NOTES: Components are shock mounted to reduce damage from big nasty kinetic energy things.
STRENGTHS: Good weaponry, well armoured with good maneuvrability
WEAKNESSES: If the disc isn't spinning when flipped, self righting is somewhat slower and less theatrical
WEIGHT CHECK: (somewhat rough)
Chassis/armour - 40kgs ish
Drive, motors and electronics - 15 kgs
Disc - 20kgs
Self righter/flipper and gearing - 10kgs
Engine to drive disc - 5 kgs
Batteries - 7kgs
Miscellaneous bits - whatever's left, drive section is overdone so there shouldn't be that many
